A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT ‘PILOT’ PAUL!! Fellow Lions, The New Year has started off with a big bang for the Thurmont Lions Club. We have received notice from the Lions magazine that Thurmont Lions will be featured in the upcoming March issue for the Thurmont Trolley Trail Project. Thanks to Lion Joel for getting this information to the International by way of a friend who works there. Thanks to Lions Gene and Shirley for everything thing they did to make this project come to fruition. And just as important, thanks to all the Lions, members of our community and Thurmont employees that worked with Lion Gene to make this a success. Awesome group! PDG Och, Lions Robin, Joyce and I attended the February 10th Cabinet Meeting. All of you that have attended these meetings in the past know how mundane they can be. Kudos’ to DG Barbara for changing the format and making it fun. The dress code was jeans, flannel shirts, red hankerchiefs, suspenders, cowboy boots and hats. It was great to see everyone dressed like; well whatever. The meeting started off with the “kiss a pig” for Diabetes Awareness. That by itself was worth the trip. I must say the piglets were not too happy with their part in this event. Ask our Cabinet Secretary Bob who was holding one of the piglets, how the piglet showed him just how much they wanted to participate. Lion George Bolling gave a presentation to the Board of Directors on starting up a Leo Club. The presentation consisted of the Objectives, Benefits, Organization and Sponsors Costs to get a Leo club up and running. The Board voted unanimously to fund this project .Lion George has been assigned as Chair of the Leo Committee and the process has already begun. Lion Joyce is ordering materials from International and Lion George will be meeting with the principals of Thurmont Middle and Catoctin High in the near future. If all goes well we should have a Leo club by the start of the fall school year. Lion George will give a more detailed report in the April newsletter. Way to go Lion George! PDG Och, Lions Don, Doug and I will be attending Lions Day at the UN on March 14. One of them (not me….I get to choose which one) will give a short presentation on the trip at our March 26th meeting. The Retreat Committee has been working very diligently to prepare for our first retreat. Please mark your calendar for Saturday, April 5 and join us for a day of fun and reflection on our club. This is an excellent way to get to know our new members and for all of us to determine the direction of our club. The Terra Rubra Lions will join us for our “Barter Night”. We look forward to another fun filled evening with Lion Bob and making some money for our Administrative account. Please bring lots of money; checks are also accepted.

CONGRATULATIONS THURMONT LIONS!!! The Thurmont Lions AND the Thurmont Trolley Trail were highlighted in the March 2008 issue of The Lion magazine (pages 36-37). Many months ago as we began work on an article that we hoped would be considered by the editors of The Lion, Lion Joel Weiss mentioned that a family friend was working at Lions International and he would make her aware of our project. He did…. and she agreed to help us get the information to the proper person. She did…..and we were on our way! This means that 1.3 million Lions throughout the world now know about the exciting Trolley Trail Project of the Thurmont Lions Club!!! A very special “THANK YOU” & “CONGRATULATIONS” to all the Lions, Town of Thurmont staff and community helpers who participated in this very special project.
Lion Bud reported that we have submitted 780 pair of unwanted glasses for recycling to third world countries.
We are still glowing in the incredible success of our recent Basket Bingo (see last month’s newsletter for details) – keep that chant going when you see Lion Susan ----- “One More Time!” “One More Time!”
It is WONDERFUL to have the “Thurmont Lions” banners on display once again on Main Street – when you see any of the Town staff, be sure to thank them for displaying our banners again.
