Vol. 51 No. 12    June 1, 2008

MAY PROGRAMSOur annual COMMUNITY NIGHT was held on May 14 – we presented donations to many organizations for whom we had budgeted financial support for this year, including the Diabetes Association, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Thurmont Senior Citizens, Thurmont Food Bank, Hope Alive, Thurmont Ministerium, Frederick County 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program, Guardian Hose Company and CASS.  We also inducted SIX new members – be sure to introduce yourself to our newest members at future meetings.  We WELCOME Lions Jo Ann Cannada, Nancy Dutterer, Carol Hutson, Ed Hutson, Suzanne Ricci and Deb Schray.

On May 28, we held our annual EDUCATION NIGHT where we announced our scholarship winners (Erin Hogan, Kaitlyn Smith, Laura Thompson as well as our 4-year renewable Vic Jagow Scholarship to Meg Glancey), essay winners (Sophia Heimbrook and Jackson Steinly), peace poster winner (Amber Sanders), Lion and Junior Lion Awards - for students with the most service-learning hours – (Tyler Watt and Lori Douglass), recognized Von Mosser (TMS) for his humanitarian efforts on mission trips to Mississippi, our EIGHT Teachers of the Year and announced (from those eight) our overall 2008 Teacher of the Year – Deborah Clarke (CHS).

When we tally up Community Night and Education Night, we presented a total of $16,600 – NOW, THAT’S A LOT OF PIT BEEF/PORK SANDWICHES!!!!  After volunteering many hours at our various fundraisers, we can personally see where many of those funds are going – to worthwhile causes in our community, to our youth, and to our educators – all encompassing our FUTURE as a community!

THEY BROUGHT THEIR SHOVELS, BUCKETS, WHEELBARROWS, TRUCKS, TRAILERS AND WAGONS Approximately FORTY people from the Thurmont Lions Club, the Thurmont Gardeners’ Club, Boy Scouts of America Troop No. 270, and other local volunteers met at the Trolley Trail on Saturday, May 17 to perform some general clean-up of the Trail and to add some native plants.  A HUGE THANK YOU to all who helped – what a wonderful turnout!!!  Tasks that seemed impossible to complete in an entire day were finished by noon!  Areas tilled, topsoil added, plants planted/watered, and mulched.  And to top it off, the following week brought welcome showers to preclude the need for bucket brigades.  One shovel and one hand spade are still looking for their owners and a few owners are still missing a number of hand tools and a long-handled rake – please check to see if these items may have gotten mixed in with your tools – let Lion Gene know.

SOME ‘GREEN’ IN HAND – We recently received $10,000 from an application made several years ago for a grant by the State Highway Administration for our Trolley Trail Project.  A huge “THANKS” to Lion Sam who made some initial contacts at SHA in an attempt to investigate the status and to Commissioner & Lion Bill Blakeslee who got the ball rolling again and got the cash in hand!!!!

MULTIPLE DISTRICT 22 CONVENTION – The 86th MD-22 Convention was held on May 7-10, 2008 at Dover, DE.  Our Club was represented by Lions Joyce, Larry, Gene, Shirley, PDG Och (Sharon), and about-to-be-installed Jo Ann.  Elections were held on May 10 – Congratulations to DG-Elect Susan Timmons and VDG-Elect Robert Disinger.  DG Barbara McKenny reported that District 22-W collected 32,000 pairs of glasses for recycling this year and that we had met 133% of our goal for Campaign Sightfirst II.  At the time of the Convention, our District had taken in 187 new members during the year and lost 140 for a net gain of 47.

WE NEED TO TURN THE HEAT UP – LET’S START “COOKIN”  1st Vice President Robin recently announced plans to assemble a COOK BOOK.  This will be a new fundraiser and plans are to have the recipes collected and the book printed in time for sales at the Thurmont-Emmitsburg Community Show in early September (or sooner).  That means – we need TO GET COOKIN’ – get those recipes to Lion Robin NOW.  So get your favorite recipes out - they can be typed or handwritten or in their original print – your original will be returned to you.  You can submit as many recipes as you like, but we are hoping for at least 3-4 from each person.  Bring your recipes to the next meeting, email them to Lion Robin at RbKee3@aol.com, or mail them to her at:  Robin Keeny, 12829 Catoctin Furnace Road, Thurmont, MD 21788

THANK-YOU’s – Thank each of you so much for your calls, visits, cards, fruit basket and especially for your prayers as I recuperate from my accident.  It is wonderful to have such caring friends and to know that help is just a phone call away from Lion Gene.
